So I too was trying to do my analysis of the budget and quite honestly I got a headache....
Outside of the whole rhetoric of Vision 20/20 and text book definitions of "development" I am still wondering where our hope for development lies as a people.
Are our human resources being adequately marshalled and facilitated in this 'development process'?
I dont mean to be treading on Mrs Walcott's territory but I just had to ask...
What does development mean to you?

hi guys just giving my views on the budget. She did not do very bad for her first time but, on the other hand in my mind the way in which the funds were allocated could have gotten a lot more thought.heyyy where in the world am i gonna find info. on balance of trade????
hi gyus wats up? my view on the budget is one of dissappointment. i think that the PM, as former Finance Minister should have advised her more on the way she should deliver the Budget. lets hope that she learns from this and does better next year. How can be so unrealistic so as to assure citizens that taxi fares wont be increase? everyone has to make a living yuo know!!!!!
did any of you guys hear any thing about Income Levels in the budget? BTW this is akissi if you all wondered.
hi peoples ariel here.the budget paper that we have for monday is a bit stressful don't u think/i mean i've looked in possibly every paper for something on the non-oil saector and can't seem to find anything.can some1 plz help me?
I believe that the minister of finance did not do a very good job with the budget. Seriously, how do you expect to raise the price of premium gas and not expect price of transportation (taxi fare) to raise.Honestly did she really think that the rise in prices could curb road rage? Am i the only one confused?... Additionly there is the major problem of crime in this country and little to nothing was done in that area. Criminals are finding new and improved ways of committing crimes and if we cannot keep up with there technology how can we expect to curb this situation. I believe that not enough thought was placed into this budget. In economics i learned about scarcity and choice and i believe that some of the choices that she made were not logically thought out and our resources are too scarce to just be handed out. Also, if food prices are constantly rising how does she expect a small $300 extra to help old age pensioners to still purchase food, pay bills and not to mention transportation? However i am not saying that it wasnt a good effort to help the elderly but i believe that if we tackle this problem of inflation head on we will be able to slow down the rate at which it rises.
Ok I'm here killin time on the net cuz I'm really not feelin the vibes to do my National Security summary, cuz to read d budget is so depressin! i agree with Sherese 100% on d budget showin poor management skills by our government. Imagine i realise dat & i don't do business subs. Its ridiculous cuz u would think dat bcuz we r mayb d 10th most homicidal place to live in d world (accordin to pamela- I don't knw if dats tru or if its UNC jus exaggeratin) dat the government would do something greater and more feasible to reduce this occurrence but NNNOOOOO.... (sigh) But it makes my work all d more easier so later
hey guys, d mad woman here.. i quoting my granfther" dis d woss budget mi hear in mi 87 yrs on d earth." okay her budged was not well done but i will excuse her bcuz it was her first time. personally, i dont think that enogh was done for the elderly. for the amount of inflation in the economy, the little money she gave to them will barely help with the food prices. also, agreeing with akissi how can you raise the gas prices and tell citizens that taxi fares would not increase? the taxi drivers also ahve to make a living and support families. she is being totally unfair to them, she did not have their interest in mind when she wrote this budget.
yo what up? Yea Ms.Wash(srry for d abbreviation)dat budget giving me headache i ha to write on infrastructure. D minister of finance ent really talking much sense to me, allyuh culd see she rush down dat paper for them d night b4. well we all agree dat d she now officially make it harder for ppl who ha to catch car because we kno taxi fares will raise again!! oh yea development to me means an act of changing or improving something to make it more productive, useful or advanced than it's previous state. Or u culd jus say its involves an upgrade from one state to another state which is more efficient(never involves going backward to a less efficient stage)
I've got a headache 2 u guys.To me development means growing or changing to an advanced state.Have we developed as a nation? in some aspects i guess you could say like transportaion between the two islandsfor e.g.I'm not really sure what my views on the budget are bcuz like ms.Tesheira said"you can't please everyone."You can see that efforts have been made to aid the elderly but will it help?(medicine isn't cheap and the price of braed isn't what it was 5 years ago.)In addition to this the statement with gas prices increasing and taxi fares not makes no sense.I'm sure taxi drivers charge according to the distance bcuz they have to buy gas(which isn't cheap if i may add)Saying that the fare will not increase is like saying go jump in a lake and hold your breath your body will survive on what little oxygen your body contains for a few days!!)RIDICULOUS RIGHT?so is that statement. If gas prices increase so will taxi fares.THEY'RE PROPORTIONAL!!!
one more thing you guys if you guy could get your hands on tuesday's newsday the entire budget's inside so you can get your info. there.Sorry this is so late but i hope it helps:)!!!
this year's budget is the best i think that has been given since the PNM goverment came into power and i support them 10000000% (yes i'm PNM 2 d bone). i mean where else in the world can someone get edu free and still have the government cater 4 their personal needs still. our country is truely blessed and i can tell u envied, we can be described as a firend from out side this country once told me, we r bless by God with something extra just to make up for the rough past we had.
he sup guys ? K i'm at a 50 50 to wat u guys said . D budget was CRAP i taught after all these years d government would gain a little commence 2 c wat they doing wrong. i mean how can u pay little attension 2 d major probs in the country . wat is $300 more on pension ,oh cum on man my grand parents dont havv a car so imagine increase taxi fares increase food price down 2 deh medicine and all increase so me ent kno wat hell $300 going 2 do . i dont even hav 2 comment bout dat statement she made bout taxi fares not raising . This budget jus should us the reason y our country is going down .we r being lead by a bunch of oxymorons . if i were 2 actually comment bout d mess she do on dat budget it would take 4 ever . i jus ghlad i riding out 4 a next couple years cause i dont want 2 c our so called "developed"country next couple years i might b in tears.
I believe that for a developing country we are not really developing. Development has to do with the improvement of the quality of life of the people. I highly doubt we can become developed if we still have ppl living in turmoil from high crime rates, high inflation rates etc. Come on we have a hospital right now that is more fitted for a prison. How then can we be on our way to vision 20/20 if these basic necessities like hospitals are not even properly in place? At least the hospital does one good thing... it makes ppl not want to go there.
Development means to me,progressively improving the quality and standard of life of the majority of citizens of a country. I don't listen the budget usually cause there are to many promises and few deliveries.
Can someone bring a copy of the newspaper so that I can get a copy of the budget please....I have bits and pieces everywhere so if you have the entire thing I would greatly appreciate seeing it..
Thanks in advance
btw.....good insightful comments thus far on this one...(keep it up!)
Development is successful progress and growth of anything; be it a country, family whatever. Btw, (strayin from d topic here) miss i wannna change mih IA!! ah go tlk 2 u 2morrow..
Hii Guys..Well, develpoment to me means making an effort to improve on the way people live..narrowing it down to their lifestyles..With development, education, housing, INCOME, and other things should be improved to make people live better. Development can give our country better statistics either in the long or short run..Basically, the budget mentioned things that they claimed had an improvement and left out a very important part...:WHAT THEY CAN DO TO IMPROVE ON IT MORE!
Hi guys. Development to me means industrilialization or economic enhancement of a country or an area. Too it can relate to a stage of growth and or enhancement. Trinidad and Tobago needs to undergo several major development because this country is at its final stages. Yes the government is trying their best, but is their best good enough? Vision 2020 is something everyone wants, but again can it really happen? Development starts with bith you and me. It's a process that needs all the help it can get inorder to be really developed.
hi gyus. jus givin my views on wat development means to me n also to comment on mr manning's budget contribution on tuesday night. development,to me, deals with the improvemnt of the quality of lives of the citizens of that country with the guidance of the government to match that of the developed countries of the world. are we enroute to becoming a developed nation? my asnwer is slowly hpefully we'll get there by 2020. did any of u listen to mr manning's contribution to the budget? it was very distasful!!! he used his tme to publicly embarrass mr rowley instead of giving his comments on the budget. having sat in the house 4 many years, i think he cud have done beta than dat n still slamed the opposition without the beheviour he displayed. not very becoming of an experienced prime minister.
Hi hi everybody :D !!! you know i clean forget ms. asked everyone to say what development means i just read your comments and remembered! anywho to me development is the process by which a country exploits its resources to their fullest advantage by the use of advanced technology to further improve the living standards of the people and the economic strength of the country. So the big question is: will we acquire this development by the year 2020? i seriously don't know. But what i do know is that its not just Tesheira's fault. She actually has SOME good ideas but really its the implementation and productivity factor that we, (the citizens) have to work on.
hey ppl just giving my views also.to me development is when something, somewhere or someone is put in a better position than it was before. Now drawing reference to the budget, mainly speaking about education, i think that not enough was done. The construction of 150 preschools and 600 more by 2012 is absolutely insane.what about using that money to upgrade the facilities for disabled children?we are all human beings with equal rights . For instance i could only identify 1 disabled bus in Tobago. This is not development, and it surely isn't making headway to vision 2020.
hey you guys it's me again. nothing much 2 comment about just that i missed having a full week of caribbean studies.-Didn't u guys? It was really interesting to learn earlier this week about how the world we know today was believed to be formed from pangaea approx. 200milliion years ago and about volcanoes and earthquakes. I MUST BE HONEST-i never really liked geo b4,but now as i've gotten older i think i've developed an appreciation for the subject(as it is contained in car.studies)-it's suddenly intriguing. Keep up the good work ms.Washington :) BTW you guys don't forget to do to the intro for your researh paper.
RESEARH!!!oops 4got the "c" in research you guys typo sorry.
Development to mean means the expansion of a country economically and also physically i.e. its population. As we all know trinidad and tobago has had a great incrase in its GDP (gross domestic product) but as a countyr we also hav to watch the size of our population. For example our death rate has almost tripled in comparison to other years, although we have a steady birth rate. The gov't shld take this matter quite seriously. Our nation supplies over 75% of the USA gas needs. As a properous caribbean country we cannot be economically strong but mentally, physically and spiritually weak.
i srry that i'm late but i'm here. Development means to me,as a change from one state to a better one. In oter words an improvement in something.
hi guys ,it's lexi here.I really enjoyed the last caribbean studies class. It was good to learn about geology and geography, it helped me to understand more about the caribbean, the location of the caribbean to the rest of the world, the landscape(why some caribbean islands are more hilly than others and also why some experience more natural disasters than others0.I did not expect to enjoy caribbean studies the way i am enjoying it now because i always believed that geography was a boring subject but now i see it's really interesting.
Getting back to the question miss asked on development. Development to me means that a country is efficiently utilising its scarce resoures inorder to satisfy its citizen's needs thus improving the country's standard of living. my
views on the budget is that it is the same as the passed years(filled with unfulfiled promises). do you guys honestly believe that we are going to become a dveloped country by 2020 at the rate at which the country's is going (inflation, crime rate)? see u guys 2morrow.
i guess development means evolving for the better.***********i don't mean to get off topic here but i just finished the reading HW dis mornin( It was de hardest thing i ever i had to read!--i cudn't stay focused at all)anywayz in the 3rd chpt. they were saying that majority of what we hear about history is Eurocentric(yay me-i learnt a new word)that means it was written with a european bias.(from their point of view--it's human nature to try and make urself not appear as the bad guy)an i thought about what i know about columbus an him discovering the "new world" an i realized that it made him out to be this great man.but when u really think about it .how great is a man who comes in ur community,ur home an and destroys life as you know it,& kills ur people, all for the sake of riches and being known as this great discoverer to please ur queen.before i read this chpt i never really appreciated the rel weight of wat i was taught in skool.u know how in the movie pochahontas u feel the sympaty and understand the anger and the fear of her tribe.that's because u were able to see it from their point of view .i know i wrote a whole lot but i jus wanted ppl to know that even if ur not a fan of caribbean studies u will gain knowledge that u will greatly appreciate
Hey wats up?
Well carib has been going go so far(thanks to my teachers) and i must say that i actually look forward to class and want to participate and no just shake mi head in class while in my head i actually want to be somewhere else (trust i did that all through BHS)
Any way development to me basically is about the quality of life of the individuals in a country and well u know how they r able to progress. I really dont believe that the amt of tall buildings in a country shows development at all - i mean T&T has alot of tall buildings and just now if u dont hae a degree u cyar buy afford to live comfortably an buy food with the rate food prices keep going up every day.
Well thats my opinion and im open to objections and remarks so if u have any u know where to find me.
God bless
Development to me is the improvement of a country in the areas of economy, education, infrastructure, mentality of citizens, quality of life.
Also while in Mrs. Walcot's class discussing the Vision 2020 I had a question for everyone. I know its a bit off the topic.
DO YOU THINK THAT THE APPROCHING ECONOMIC RECESSION IN THE USA WILL AFFECT TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO? AND IF SO DO YOU THINK THAT WE WILL STILL BE ABLE TO REACH " DEVELOPED NATION STATUS" AS INDICATED IN VISION 2020 BY THE YEAR 2020 WITH THIS RECESSION?
I was just wondering what everyone thought.
hi people ,I'm a bit late with the meaning of development but its better late than never anyway back to the point .To me development is a state of improving the quality ,making it more productive or useful OR gradual advancement through a series of progressive changes. Well I think T&T could be more developed for a country which is wealthy from oil etc , if the government could only keep there promises or put effort in completing there work then the country would be in a better state instead of making a new budget every year and implementing new ideas without achieving the ideas from the previous budget .
Hey ppl!! I can't tell when i last i blogged but to me development is improving the quality of life as well as enhancing the country economically.
hey guys i'm not realy going 2 tlk bout the meaning of development cause we all already hav an idea about wat it means . i'm jus answering 2 christina's ques. and yes girl i do think that it will hav a great effect uppon trinidad & tobago and hamper us from becoming a so called "developed nation"by the year 2020
In my opinion, I think that development is the qualitative measure pattern of economic change in a country.
To comment on christina's question, I believe that the recession will affect Trinidad and Tobago, because our dollar, along with many other dollars from different countries around the world is "backed" by the US currency. Thus if something like a decrease in the value of the US dollar of a recession should occur it will affect our dollar in one way or another.
To answer christina question- Honestly I think everyone will feel it now that america very close to going into economic recession I mean look how european countries like UK and them struggling now too. But I find even though we will be affected by the whole dollar thing like what zuberi said, our country will most likely feel it more within the tourism sector when people travel less and that sort of thing. Right? But then again I just read that the America stock market points thingy actually going up now so hopefully Obama(YAY!)or McCain (BOO!) will help them when the go into power Nov 4. I really hope we will reach developed status soon but with our government and recession looming in the background things look really bleak for TnT :[
ANONYMOUS blogger here on d prowl again. On d issue of development to me da is d enhancing of something and the improvement of its quality , and growth is just a matter of physical expansion ,getting bigger.
Mr/Mrs Anonymity signing out.
hhhhhhhhheeeeeeyyyyyyyyyy yah guys...sorry i'm so late with my meaning of the budget.....as they say..."IT'S BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!".Anyways...Development simply means the process by which a country/nation progresses/improves/advances in many ways,e.g technology wise,in the tourism sector....this may not be the perfect definition but this is what i think....CIAO!!!!! ADIOS!!!! AU REVOIR!!!
sorry bout that i meant the meaning of Development!!!! not the budget!!
Hi christina, i'm srry for being late in response to ur question but i hope this is what u were looking for in an answer. As everyone may well know that t&t suffers tremendously when USA suffers much. Lets not forget that t&t is not a self-sustaining county. And since t&t depends on export for agricultural produce and other material things,t&t will definitely be affected. And to put it bluntly, with this recession luring around, "WE'LL NEVER." but that's just ones opinion but what u all thing?
hey guys i feel like i'm so behind time.N e way...just to answer christina's question-yes i belive that the recession will affect us in t&t.This recession will affect all developing countries in terms of trade and finance.Demand for their exports will be reduced and imports and services from other countries will be less and costly. In addition to this i would also like to agree with jt and zuberi with the value of our dollar being afffected because it is"backed" by the US dollar. Will it affect us reaching developed nation status by 2020 you ask? Well in my opinion it most likely will but we still have 11 years to reach this goal and if things turn around(dear lord i'm praying for thngs to not only for their sakes but for all the other countries who are also suffering)and turn around soon we could get there.ALOT can happen in the space of ten years.Compared to ten years ago look at where we are now.We may or may not reach our goal when2020 come but i think we can get pretty close. To stray off the tpoic a bit don't 4get mrs.walcott's hw you guys.Enjoy the rest of yyour weekend and c u guys 2morrow!
sorry 4 all those typos again you guys i'm just rushing off to go finish hw.
i forget all bout this ah actually dreamt about it last night so ... I think the budget wasn't properly analysed, there are major aspects tha was left untouched. and things tha was said tha could never be true. but what can we do we had a major part in ellecting the members of government so we would have to live with it
Ipersonally think that that whole budget is full of holes and nothing there will be accomplished when it is predicted to because the preparations to make those changes have not even been set in motion. you need a solid foundation to bulid a house, you cannot build it on sand and this is what our lovely government is doing. Just a thought but a house built on sand eventually gets washed away or destroyed.
just to say again you cannot excuse her on it being 'not good' or inaccurate because its not like she does all the hard work. they are many financial advisors who are under her to assist with information gathering in order to understand the economy and make proper judgements. she as a minister of finance, who i presume has some understanding of business and the economy should know if the information coming to her suits what she observes in the economy. although it might be hard for her to see out of her no tax, dark tinted, expensive ride. with a carefree life as a minister, and trust me i have an aunt who is one of the permanent secretaries to a minister, i know what i'm talkin about, and with all her perks once her life is good why bother to actually make an effort to do her job right. she is suppose to be there to support the country. and some of you also said that the former minister did not give her any help or guidance (how could he when he can't guide himself), that is not an excuse, if she really was interested she would have made an effort.if even people who don't know much about economics or business can tell that the budget is nonesense what then is to be said of her effort and research???
to answer ms. wash question i think that there are many different DEFINITIONS FOR and different TYPES OF development for example social or econiomic, but generally for a country development can be the way in which that country grows and expands in a stable and sustainable manner and every one (all citizens)benefits...NOW in accordance with the 2008-2009 budget, its seems as though the development is just wishful thinking...its seems that all the measures taken for this budget was not thought out fully...our country may develop...but no growth will take place...we need 2 sit down together and iron out these kinks or else...our vision 20/20 would be more like 40/40!!! ~kk~
R we still debating about devopment?????? isnt it overdue???? from shurvone n i. plz answer asap!!!!!!!! Btw miss, love ur class n method of teaching.
yep me too love the method, normally i feel like sleeping in classes but hers definitely not.
well shurvone and akissi i guess so cuz everyone hasn't given their views yet. That and also alot of ppl haven't really answered christina's question yet. TO ANY LATE BLOGGERS OUT THERE- please don't forget the typed intro for Ms.wash due tomorrow. It's going towards our overall mark don't forget and don't say i didn't remind you guys;)See you guys tomorrow.
Haven't blogged in a while but i'm here again. I think that development is refers to improvements in ways of managing an area's natural and human resources in order to create wealth and improve people's lives.
What do you all think..is it realistic?
Vision 2020 Statement
By the year 2020, Trinidad and Tobago will be a united, resilient, productive, innovative and prosperous nation with a disciplined, caring, fun-loving society, comprising healthy, happy and well-educated people and built on the enduring attributes of self-reliance, respect, equity and integrity
In which...
every citizen equal opportunities to achieve his/her fullest potential All citizens enjoy a high quality of life, where quality healthcare is available to all and where safe, peaceful, environmentally friendly communities are maintained.
All citizens are assured of a sound, relevant education system tailored to meet the human resource needs of a modern, progressive, technologically advancing nation Optimum use is made of all the resources of nation
The family as the foundation of the society contributes to its growth, development and stability.
There is respect for the rule of law and human rights and the promotion of the principles of democracy.
The diversity and creativity of all it's people are valued and nurtured.
i dont think that this statement is fully realsitic because not everying that is wanted for the development of this vision will not come tru. for example, lets use the idea of free education for all, although everyone will ahve free education, not everyone could afford school uniforms, transportation money and other basic necessities.
i think that the statement sounds jus too impossible, a place where everything will be perfect, but in every society there will arise conflict, therefore i dont think that vision 2020 is realistic.
Well to me, if it sounds realistic then it proberbly is,like Obama said in his defining speach it well take a joint effort from the people to perpetuate a change,in a summerized version.Change does not come over night!
whhhhaaaaaaaammm miss....like miss forget that she create a blog ...when last we blog??????? hhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmm........
you know abeni seriously! I now came on to ask that same question but anywho.
OBAMA WON!wwwooooohhhhhoooooooooooo but where does that leave us? does this really benefit us? cause he's focusing on internal (USA) things and to me it doesn't sound like if we'll benefit much when he focuses on the whole bail out of automotive conpanies and reducing unemployment in USA both as a region and as a country. But then again I may be wrong.
To answer rebecca question: the 1st paragraph has like approximately 10 adjectives in total! lol. I really don't think this is realistic at all, I think PNM should stick to campaigning the words 20/20 alone cause this description will put them and the country in problems when the year 2020 come around and things haven't changed much. They should just work on a more gradual sustainable development but then again it's good to have goals lol.
that's true jt goals are important without them we are fishes out of water....lol. But seriously did miss forget us? We need goals cause there will be no feeling of of fullfilment and therefore life would be meaningless.Go obama!!!!
hey guys i haven't been blogging lately-lots of school work(labs!. N E way just to answer becky's question-i guess it is realistic in a way to a point bcuz the opportunites may be there but like kere said everybody wouldn't be able to afford some basics so every citizen wouldn't be "well educated"for example,so i guess some of the goals can be reached but not the entire thing.Who knows what can happen-anything is possible.Go Obama!!- or should i say Mr.president and i quote,"Yes we can!"
hey guys-just blogging to say good luck with ur lit reviews and don't 4get we have 2 car.studies tests this week, good luck in advance.see u guys monday.
